Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Dawn Patrol
The alarm goes off at 2:30 a.m. on my birthday, and leaving the warmth of your sleeping bag feels nearly impossible. Every fiber of your body protests. But somehow, you drag yourself out into the crisp night air, the moon casting silver light over the mountains as you bushwhack your way up the slope.
And then...the sky begins to change. Colors creep over the horizon, soft pinks melting into fiery oranges, painting the peaks around you in a glow that makes every early-morning struggle worth it. Up above Buena Vista, surrounded by towering 14ers, between Mt. Yale and Mt. Harvard, the world feels impossibly vast and breathtaking.
Staying in my sleeping bag would have been easy. But witnessing a special sunrise like this? Absolutely unforgettable.
